B.S., Industrial engineering, University of Tennessee.

As energy research director, Mr. Doane works with the Tennessee State Building Energy Management Office, Rebuild America, Department of Energy (DOE), and the Institute for Public Service, conducting energy research and outreach activities that serve to educate all types of energy users and encourage efficient use of energy resources.

Mr. Doane researches the latest energy technologies and recommends those that will reduce demands for energy. He also calculates economic paybacks to ensure that actual savings can be measured and verified over 20 years. He prefers a life cycle analysis approach to capital asset management, promoting long-term strategic planning instead of short-term capital cost strategies.

Mr. Doane’s main areas of expertise are lighting, controls, and HVAC (heating ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. He has been directly involved in lighting-system energy improvements in more than 4 million square feet of schools, universities, commercial, and industrial buildings over the past 8 years. Mr. Doane served for several years as energy engineer and account manager for Carolina Power and Light Company, applying demand-side management techniques in the marketing and energy engineering departments that resulted in more than $20 million of measurable energy improvements in the education, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Mr. Doane serves on the board of directors for the East Tennessee chapter of the United States Green Building Council and as co-chairman for the marketing committee of the East Tennessee Clean Fuels Coalition. He also is involved in the Beaver Creek Watershed Association and the local ASHRAE (American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers) chapter. Previously, Mr. Doane served on the board of directors for the National Textile Quality Control Association and the Johnson County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Mr. Doane is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and a Certified Demand Side Manager (CDSM).

In his leisure time, Mr. Doane likes to play golf, tennis, and water sports.
