The University of Tennessee (UT), the official land-grant institution for the State of Tennessee, is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States.  It now extends to several campuses across the state, but Knoxville remains the flagship campus, offering more than 35 degree programs to its 19,000 undergraduate students and 5,500 masters and doctoral students.  Students come from every county in Tennessee, every state in the nation, and many countries.

Externally funded research at UT-Knoxville approaches $80 million per year, placing the school among the country's leading research institutions. The Knoxville metropolitan area, with a population of 600,000 is nestled in the scenic hills of East Tennessee within an hour's drive of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The University of Tennessee is located near two major energy and environmental institutions:  Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

ORNL is one of our nation's largest multipurpose national laboratories, specializing in energy and environmental research and development. TVA, which is the nation's largest electric utility, bears broad stewardship for the natural resources of the seven-state Tennessee Valley region.  Recognizing that strength is created through unity, EERC frequently collaborates with researchers from these and other regional organizations.
