This is a foundation-building course intended for individuals involved in land-disturbing activities covered by TDEC’s Construction General Permit: inspection and enforcement personnel from all levels of government, plan preparers and reviewers, and designers and engineers. This course aims to build a solid working knowledge of erosion and sedimentation processes and practices.

    OBJECTIVES AND GOALS:
    • To become familiar with the state agencies involved with erosion prevention and sediment control.
    • To gain an understanding of the erosion process and hydrologic cycle.
    • To become familiar with the NPDES construction stormwater permitting process.
    • To become familiar with common structural erosion and sediment control practices.
    • To gain a better understanding of the impact of erosion on Tennessee’s natural resources.
    • To gain an understanding of Best Management Practices for erosion prevention and sediment control on construction sites.

    Prerequisites: No formal requirements.

Materials needed: You will be provided with a copy of the current edition of the Tennessee Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook: A Guide to the Protection of State Waters through the use of Best Management Practices during Land Disturbing Activities.

Certification: All Level I workshop participants are required to take a course completion exam in order to be awarded PDH credit and a Certificate of Course Completion.

    PDHs: 7.0 hours

    Times: Registration 8:00-8:30 a.m.; Class 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

    Cost: $150

Special Note: This course is a prerequisite for the Level II course “Design Principles for Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control on Construction Sites.”

Registration: Registration is limited. Early registration and pre-payment are strongly encouraged to guarantee your space. You must have your registration in by 5 working days prior to the workshop to be assured a space (see registration form for deadlines). To register, complete the registration form and fax or mail it to the number and address provided on the form. Email registration is possible: please be sure to include all the information requested on the form and send it to Louis Allen (lallen1@utk.edu). Confirmation of registration will be by email or fax within 5 days. If you have any questions regarding registration or course content, contact the Tennessee Water Resources Research Center at (865) 974-2151 or email Tim Gangaware at gangwrrc@utk.edu.

Cancellation Policy: In the event you are unable to attend the workshop you registered for, attendee substitutions are allowed and encouraged. We will issue full refunds for cancellation made five (5) working days prior to the workshop. Due to heavy demand for limited workshop seats, no refunds will be issued thereafter and no-show registrants will not be refunded as well. Transfers may be made to another scheduled workshop and a $25 transfer fee will be charged.

This advanced, two-day course is designed for engineers, environmental designers, plan preparers, and reviewers. Landscape architects and other professionals involved with the construction site planning and design are encouraged to attend. Detailed instruction is given on the engineering technologies needed to control stormwater on a construction site. Workshop participants will obtain the tools needed for developing an acceptable, working erosion and sediment control plan as described in TDEC’s Tennessee Erosion & Sediment Control Handbook and required by the Tennessee General Construction Stormwater Permit.

    TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE:
    • Site investigation and hydrologic analysis.
    • Alternative peak discharge methods.
    • Conveyance system design (open channels, rip rap, etc.).
    • Sediment transport process and analysis.
    • Overview and design of selected common structural controls (i.e. sediment control/ stormwater management ponds, check-dams, diversions, retrofits).

    OBJECTIVES AND GOALS:

    • Review of surface water hydrologic principles and hydrologic evaluation for construction sites including time of concentration, runoff coefficient, and storm event analysis.
    • Review of peak runoff methods, including Rational and TR-55 approaches.
    • Understanding design principles and performance of Best Management Practices (BMPs), including detailed temporary sediment pond analysis.
    • Application of NRCS TR-55 software for determining construction site runoff.

Prerequisites: The Level I course, Fundamentals of Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control, is required; the workshop participant should have a basic understanding of surface water hydrology either through formal engineering training or through equivalent experience.

Materials needed: Please bring a copy of the current edition of the Tennessee Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook: A Guide to the Protection of State Waters through the use of Best Management Practices during Land Disturbing Activities; you must have it for the course. Also, bring a portable calculator and pencil.

    PDHs: 14.0 hours

Times: Registration 8:00-8:30 a.m. first day; Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided both days.

    Cost: $300

Registration: Registration is limited to 40 persons. Early registration and pre-payment are strongly encouraged to guarantee your space. You must have your registration in by 5 working days prior to the workshop to be assured a space (see registration form for deadlines).
