In East Tennessee, several different sizes of electric AFVs are used.

First, there's the Chattanooga Area Regional Transit Authority's (CARTA's) downtown electric shuttles. These electric AFVs that were built by Chattanooga's Advanced Vehicle Systems (AVS) in the early 1990's provide transit around downtown. They operate out of the parking garage on Market Street next to the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel. Within the parking garage is also EVIC, the Electric Vehicle Information Center. In addition, Knoxville Area Transit's (KAT's) new trolleys operate on a combination of electricity and propane. They are plugged in at night to fully charge the batteries.

Second, NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) are used by several different organizations in the region. These vehicles are also called low-speed electric vehicles as they are limited to use on 35 mph or less streets (typically city streets) and are governed to 25 mph. They range from having seating for 4 with truck space to offering seating for 2 with a rear bed.
Fun Buggies of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg operates 50 NEVs in Sevier County, which are a great alternative to driving around those cities in gasoline vehicles.
