 
Biodiesel, ethanol and propane are the three alternative fuels that are publicly available right now in East Tennessee. Of these fuels, the most stations are ethanol as E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline), while biodiesel blends can be purchased in roughly 25 locations. Thanks to Pilot there are now two places where you can get E85 (click here to see), and it's possible more may open before the end of 2007.
Propane is largely available just through locations that have refueling for other equipment but have converters that will allow refueling of vehicles. Some of that data is "of greater age," thus you should call ahead to ensure those locations still provide the service.
Biodiesel
The map below shows where biodiesel stations are located across East and some of Middle Tennessee. Beneath that is a large table that has more information on each of the stations. Simply click on the colored dot for the location you want more information on and it will take you to that spot. As soon as any other stations are opened, their information will be provided here.
The short story currently (4-5-08) is that we've recently lost several B20 stations including two in Tri-Cities and one in Knoxville, but a couple of others have opened (Knoxville and Cleveland) and it's likely that 7-8 new B20 pumps could be open this year thanks to funding from the state's Interagency Alt Fuels Working Group.

E10
We used to list E10 stations here, but in 2007 E10 became so commonplace in East Tennessee that on the order of 60-80 percent of the stations were offering it, and that continues in 2008. You can certainly still find stations that don't have E10, but odds are high that there are numerous stations that do near you. Just look for a small label on the pump that says something similar to "contains up to 10% ethanol."

Quick History
In early 2004, there were no biodiesel or ethanol stations in East Tennessee. There were some places where you could refuel with propane, but, as described above, they all served refueling other equipment first (refueling vehicles was and is a hit-n-miss thing for propane). Thanks to McNutt Oil and Calloway Oil of Blount County, we began offering biodiesel as B20 to the public in the first half of 2004. Currently (early 2007), there are twenty-five (25) public stations, which are listed below. Benton Oil, Calloway Oil, McNutt Oil, Regal Fuels, Sweetwater Valley Oil, Robinson Enterprises, Tri-Cities Petroleum and the Bradley-Bledsoe, Hawkins, Washington, Blount-Greenback and Greene Farmers Co-ops have all opened stations ranging from B5 to B20 to B99, although most offer B20. (Knox, Bradley, Claiborne and Monroe Farmers Co-ops are all looking to start offering blends.) In cases where B99 is offered, the B99 pump is typically right next to the diesel pump so you can splash blend any mix you like right there.
Looking at the recent past, ethanol was not publicly available in East Tennessee until May 2005 when Pilot Corporation opened 34 convenience stores in central East Tennessee (primarily Knoxville area) with E10. They are working to open what will be East Tennessee's first E-85 station, and several other fuel suppliers are considering it. When Pilot opened their E10 stations, Appalachian Oil opened about 13 stations in the Tri-Cities as well.
Other work that is on-going by the coalition and coalition partners is bringing CNG (compressed natural gas) and hydrogen stations to East Tennessee. Several different projects are underway that have private infrastructure for these fuels here, but no public access. This is fitting because there are very few AFVs that run these fuels here, and all are owned by municipalities, utilities or private organizations.
One of the main tasks that the ETCFC is working on is building public refueling locations throughout East Tennessee. One of our long term goals is to have tanks and pumps for each of the alternative fuels located across East Tennessee, that can serve both local and nonlocal customers. The best situations will be where you can pull up to a regular fueling station and fill-up with biodiesel, E85, or even natural gas just as easily as you would gasoline or diesel. We are working on biodiesel and ethanol first as these fuels are easier to integrate into common infrastructure, cost less, and their are more vehicles that can run these fuels already on the road.
