On December 5 we had roughly 30 attendees for this IMPLEMENTING BEST PRACTICES workshop that went quite well! Steve Riley's presentation was a standout as he really had his finger on the pulse of fleets, but all the presentations provided some good information. Below are the presentations from that day in the order in which they were presented; all have been turned into color pdfs to reduce file size. If you have any questions, please contact Jonathan Overly (865-974-3625).

All the pre-workshop information is shown here.

The ETCFC is very pleased to be building a relationship with Tom Johnson, a fleet expert who works tirelessly to help fleets connect with their bretheren who are achieving excellence in numberous ways. He run two contests--The 100 Best Fleets and Goverment Fleet Manager of the Year--and a brand new magazine, "100 Bests Fleets In North America," and you can read more about his work and projects at his Website.

Maps & Directions:
Click either of the below maps to see the route that is described in the below section.

Driving directions -- from the connection of I-640/I-75 to I-40 on the west side of downtown Knoxville:
Travel north on I-640/I-75 approximately 1 mile to the Western Avenue exit (marked as "West Haven" on the maps), and exit to the right. This exit splits to direct travelers east or west on Western; take the route to west on Western (which will direct you straight at first then under Western Avenue and through a right-hand turning loop). Once on Western, proceed to the 2nd stop light and turn left on Ed Shouse Drive. Travel to the other end of Ed Shouse Drive (about one-half mile) and turn right onto Middlebrook Pike. Your first right-hand turn is the curving entrance to KUB's Hoskins Center site. Pull up to the gate and tell the guard you are here for the "Best Practices" workshop, and you will be directed to a parking area. You'll be walking back to the building that was immediately to your right when you were at the guard station.

Knoxville Seminar
December 5th 2008

Planned speakers include...

Pam Nelson from CCG Systems
She has written a book called "making a difference as a public fleet professional." Her clients include the 2008 Government Fleet manager of the year and the 2007 #1 most efficient fleet in North America according to government Fleet magazine. Her company services over 350 public fleets and 35 of the top 100. She will be presenting the best practices from the best fleets across America. She contends every problem has a solution.

Steve Riley, Assistant Director Fleet Operations City of Atlanta
Atlanta is facing the threat of privization. Steve studied over 200 case studies of managed competition. He will condense this down to the most mission critical elements to respond to any outside competition. This is an excellent benchmarking exercise, you need to be prepared. An indexed CD will be available of all 200 case studies including consultants studies valued at $50,000. In addition, Atlanta received the biggest grant in the country to date $5 million dollars covering 1000 vehicles. He will discuss the grant and how you can obtain them, also. This discussion will include a comprehensive template to go green.

Kendall Stiles, CPA Knoxville Utilities Board
Kendall will discuss their cost savings practices.

Jonathan Overly, East Tennessee Clean Fuels
Jonathan will introduce green fleet fuels and technologies, including biofuels use and options, why idle reduction needs to be your toolkit, and how these options and other alternative fuels can help your fleet achieve carbon footprint reductions.

One fleet, the most efficient in North America for 2007, is on track to save $700,000 in fuel this year.  Another fleet is securing $700,000 of equipment with no RFP's.

You can implement these new technologies tomorrow in your own operation!

Tom C Johnson, founder of the 100 Best Fleets and Government Fleet manager of the year awards will present the 10 breakthrough ideas from the 100 Best fleets in 2008.

You need to see what World-Class looks like and benchmark your own operation.
