Presentations/Meetings. Lori Kincaid, associate director of EERC's Center for Clean Products and Clean Technologies (CCPCT), and Maria Socolof, a CCPCT senior research associate, conducted a training seminar for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in March. Kincaid and Socolof provided an overview of life-cycle assessment (LCA) and an introduction to the LCA being conducted by UT for the DfE [Design for the Environment] Computer Display Project. Kincaid and Socolof also presented the goals and scope of their DfE Computer Display Project at the High Definition Systems Information Exchange Conference '98 in Rosslyn, Virginia. The conference, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), provided an exchange of information on DARPA-funded activities. Kincaid and Socolof's presentation sought to solicit industry involvement in the computer display project.

Rosalyn McKeown-Ice, director of EERC's Center for Geography and Environmental Education, attended the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development as a delegate of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The April meeting, convened in New York City, focused on the review of progress related to chapters of Agenda 21 on protecting and managing freshwater; technology transfer; capacity building; education, public awareness, and training; and science for sustainable development.

Projects. The EERC's Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), under the leadership of Associate Director Tim Gangaware, is creating a minipark behind Flenniken Square Apartments in South Knoxville that will connect Vestal Park to Knoxville's greenway system. The project, which also involves the riparian management expertise of WRRC Research Assistants Belinda Woodiel, Ruth Anne Hanahan, and Liz Upchurch and CAC AmeriCorps team members Tabby Fenn and Beth Atchley, is a public-private partnership among WRRC, Ijams Nature Center, CAC AmeriCorps, and Wood Brothers Properties. The minipark will protect and improve the quality of Goose Creek near the site and provide educational and recreational opportunities.

Della Martin, a research associate with EERC's Systems Development Institute, served as one of the judges for the Visual FoxPro Technical Excellence Awards. The contest, sponsored by Advisor Publications, Inc., showcased a variety of solutions developers had built using Visual FoxPro software. The awards were presented in May at the FoxPro Developer's Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Proposals. The Waste Management Research and Education Institute (WMREI), a state-supported Center of Excellence based at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is soliciting proposals for one-year policy-research grants beginning July 1, 1998. WMREI, which is an EERC affiliate, is particularly interested in funding research that contributes to innovative ways of achieving environmental sustainability. Proposals are due June 19. For more information contact EERC Executive Director/WMREI Policy Director Jack Barkenbus at 974-4251.

The EERC conducts analytical, unbiased, and multidisciplinary research designed to promote real-world solutions to problems in the fields of energy, environment, technology, and economic development.
