Ph.D., Geography, University of Tennessee. Don Alvic is director of the Systems Development Institute (SDI), a joint venture between EERC and the University of Tennessee's Transportation Center. SDI (formerly Pellissippi Research Institute) provides a contract mechanism between UT and the Energy Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Alvic manages the contracts as well as 70 full-time university research staff members and 10 graduate students who work at the SDI. Dr. Alvic's research focuses on military transportation systems and environmental issues. His transportation-research work includes using rapid prototyping, CASE, and other system-development tools to analyze several military systems. Dr. Alvic's primary environmental project involves examining the environmental and economic impact caused by implementation of acid-rain legislation. While developing siting methodologies, Dr. Alvic conducted research on the location of electric power plants. Before joining the EERC in 1984, Dr. Alvic taught geography at Central Michigan University and worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ponape (now Pohnpei), Micronesia, United States Trust Territory of the Pacific (now Federated States of Micronesia). Dr. Alvic's hobbies include operating ham radio and scuba diving. |
