B.A., Political Science, Kalamazoo College. Dr. Barkenbus, a political scientist and researcher, joined the EERC as deputy director in 1987 and was appointed director in 1995. His research has focused on the interface of technology and institutions. Currently, Dr Barkenbus is investigating collaborative approaches to policy, both domestic and international, that go beyond command-and-control government regulation. Dr. Barkenbus is increasingly involved in Southeast Asia. In fact, he received the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship to Malaysia (1996), led a United States-Asia Environmental Partnership project in Hong Kong (1999), and carried out a research fellowship at Hawaii's East-West Center (2000). Before joining the University of Tennessee, Dr. Barkenbus served 10 years as senior scientist and deputy director for the Institute for Energy Analysis, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Prior to moving to East Tennessee, Dr. Barkenbus was a researcher at the Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C., and at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkey for three years in the late 1960s. When not working, Dr. Barkenbus pretends he is still 20 years old by engaging in competitive tennis matches. |
